According to the school, Wayne State University is a nationally recognized research institution dedicated to preparing students to excel in an increasingly fast-paced and interconnected global society. As Michigan's only urban research university, Wayne State occupies a unique niche as a catalyst for investigating and helping to resolve the myriad issues facing residents of the contemporary environment. Reflecting its location and the excellent international reputation of its graduate schools, particularly in the sciences, Wayne State boasts the most diverse student body among Michigan's public universities. Students from more than 60 countries attend classes on main campus. Wayne State students not only are part of a richly diverse learning and social community; the university also is in the forefront of the globalization movement in higher education with a wealth of opportunities for internationally themed coursework and study-abroad programs. Much of Wayne State's research originates in its acclaimed School of Medicine, the nation's largest single-campus medical school. Wayne State's main campus in Detroit's University Cultural Center includes 13 schools and colleges with more than 380 academic programs. With about 29 000 students, in fall 2012, WSU was ranked 41st in minority enrollment out of the nation's 147 public, high/very high research activity universities. While Wayne State students are primarily from the three major counties in Detroit Metro area, the university recruits students from around the world and country and is the preferred destination for many international students. In fall 2014, our students originated from 49 states and 64 foreign countries. About one-third of students are minorities. Wayne State designs curricula especially to meet the needs of diverse, nontraditional students who are commuting, working and raising families. WSU's five satellite centers throughout Southeast Michigan offer classes at various times, including days, evenings and weekends. On the main campus, WSU has opened nine new buildings since 2000, including a recreation and fitness center, bookstore, college of pharmacy and health sciences and three residence halls. The residence halls feature private bathrooms, Wi-Fi and cable access, on-site dining, retail and central locations. Wayne State's main campus is steps from Detroit's world-class museums, galleries, theatres and a short drive to professional sports and entertainment venues. Cultural activities sponsored by WSU take place year-round. All these elements provide students with world-class education in the real world, the hallmark of Wayne State University.
