In Madison, Wisconsin, the University of Wisconsin–Madison is a public land-grant research university. On a 933-acre campus, UW–Madison was founded in 1848 as the official state university of Wisconsin and the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System. It was Wisconsin's first public university and is still the state's oldest and largest public university.
In 2021, 33,506 undergraduate, 9,772 graduate, 1,968 special, and 2,686 professional students were enrolled at UW–Madison, which is organized into 20 schools and colleges. It offers 136 undergraduate majors, 148 master's degree programs, and 120 doctoral programs. With over 24,232 faculty and staff, the university is the largest employer in Wisconsin and a major contributor to the state's economy.
Wisconsin is one of the Association of American Universities' twelve founding members, a select group of prominent North American research universities. It spent $1.2 billion on research and development in 2018, making it the seventh most expensive university in the United States. As of March 2020, 26 Nobel laureates, two Fields medalists, and one Turing award recipient were alumni, faculty, or researchers at UW–Madison.
The University is located on a 936-acre campus in Madison (population: 243,344). Served by air and bus; major airports serve Milwaukee (80 miles) and Chicago (120 miles); train serves Columbus (30 miles). School operates transportation on campus and in local area.
