The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC, UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Chapel Hill, or simply Carolina) is a public research university classified as a Public Ivy located on a 729-acre campus in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. After its founding in 1789, UNC-Chapel Hill became one of the country's oldest public universities.
The university has educated 19,117 undergraduate students and 10,984 graduate students and offers 74 undergraduate programs. In addition, the university offers 104 master's degree programs and 65 doctoral degrees. Biology, business administration, psychology, media and journalism, and political science are the most popular majors. Students can participate in over 550 officially recognized student organizations apart from their academic pursuits.
The University is located on a 729-acre campus in Chapel Hill (population: 59,635), eight miles from Durham. Served by bus; major airport serves Raleigh (30 miles); train serves Durham. School operates transportation on campus and to Duke U.
