Established in 1912, the University of Memphis is a public research university located in Memphis, Tennessee. With a series of events and name changes, in 1957, it received full university status and changed its name to Memphis State University. The university is the flagship institution of the Tennessee Board of Regents system.
The university has four campuses- Main Campus, Park Avenue Campus, Downtown Law School Campus, and Lambuth Campus. Its main campus is spread across an area of 1,160-acres. The university is home to students from more than 72 countries.
The university houses several centers of advanced research, which conduct research in a variety of subjects including ecology, business and economics, education, Egyptian art archaeology, environmental biology, electron microscopy, and natural history.
The University of Memphis has more than 250 registered student organizations. The university has its student-run newspaper, several magazines, and award-winning Press Centres. The university also operates the Chucalissa Indian Village, an American-Indian heritage site and museum. The Memphis Tigers varsity sports teams compete in the NCAA Division I American Athletic Conference.
