University of Detroit, Mercy

The Society of Jesus, an order known for excellence in education, has a history in Detroit that dates to the 1600s. In 1877, the Jesuits, at the invitation of Bishop Caspar Henry Borgess of Detroit, established Detroit College. Located on the bustling corner of Jefferson Avenue, the college expanded into the University of Detroit. In 1927, under the guidance of Fr. John P. McNichols, the University moved many of its programs to a sprawling campus at Livernois and Six Mile Road (McNichols Road).In 1990, the University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit combined their resources and operations in a consolidated institution with the same ongoing commitments.In addition to the magazine's annual list of regional best universities, Detroit Mercy also earned 17th rank for Best Colleges for Veterans in the Midwest, 35 nationally for Best Value Schools.Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D., serves as president of the University.
