Established in 1848, the University of Mississippi (UM) is a flagship public university located in Oxford, Mississippi. It is a sea and land-grant university and is the state’s largest university by student enrollment.
It has a main campus in Oxford and a medical school in Jackson, along with campuses in Tupelo, Booneville, Grenada, and Southaven, as well as an accredited online high school. It is home to students from more than 90 countries. UM offers numerous undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs.
The University of Mississippi libraries, which include the main J.D. Williams Library and the Science Library, house nearly 4.43 million volumes of books and journals. They also provide access to more than 214 e-databases, 135,210 e-journals, and 814,143 e-books.
UM is known for its research and the first human lung transplant led by James Hardy took place in its medical center only. The University of Mississippi Field Station in Abbeville is a natural laboratory used to study, research, and teach about sustainable freshwater ecosystems. Moreover, the university offers several special programs in its Center for Intelligence and Security Studies and the Center for Manufacturing Excellence.
