Mississippi State University

Mississippi State University (MSU), formally known as Mississippi State University for Agriculture and Applied Science is a public research university. Established in 1878, it is one of the land-grant (agricultural) universities located in the vibrant city of Starkville, Mississippi. The university is dedicated to three broad purposes: learning, research, and service. Mississippi State University covers a total area of 4,200 acres which includes farms, pastures, and woodlands of its experiment station. 

MAFES Plant Science Farm of approximately 560 acres, 10 greenhouses, and more than 40 other structures, as well as the MAFES Animal Sciences Farm of 1,650 acres and 52 structures, is home to the agricultural research of the university. 

The university also has an off-campus center in Meridian and the Stennis Space Center in Hancock County. The university’s engineering college offers a master of science degree in collaboration with the US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg. MSU is one of the only six universities in the US to house a presidential library and its library has more than 2,124,341 volumes and 70,331 journals.

The university has the largest budget for research and development nearing $241 million in Mississippi. It has contributed to almost all fields of science ranging from the development of the first all-composite airplane and small business jet to determining the gold-standard genome sequence of cotton. The university is making a great social impact by providing solutions to world hunger and poverty by working with governmental organizations.

Apart from academic excellence, the university also holds ground in co-curricular activities. It has more than 300 student organizations, its radio station, music band sports facilities, and has 16 athletic teams.
