Mercer University was founded in 1833 as Mercer Institute and gained its university status in 1837. It is the oldest private university in Georgia. Initially, it was established at Penfield, Georgia in 1833 by Baptists in Georgia and later relocated to Macon in 1871 and expanded in 1972 when Atlanta Baptist College merged with the University.
The university has three major campuses, the main campus in Macon and other two in Atlanta and Savannah, along with other regional centres in Columbus, Henry and Douglas County. It is home to students from more than 56 countries. It has a diverse multicultural environment.
The main campus in Macon houses the major academic faculties of the university. The university has four libraries to aid the academic courses. The university also has an Opera House, university press, a radio station, student newspaper and a debating society.
The sports at Mercer University are given equal importance as compared to that of academics. Different campuses house different sports facilities including pools, tennis courts, gyms and also provide free fitness programs to the students.
Macon is a city of charm and character with bustling streets full of local restaurants, shops, art galleries and good opportunities for outdoor explorations and truly feels like a home away from home. Other locations of the university campuses are also as attractive and exciting as Macon.
