Established in 1887, the Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) is a public university located in Florida. It is a member institution of the State University System of Florida and one of the state's land grant universities. The university is home to students from more than 70 countries.
In addition to the 422 acres of Tallahassee campus, FAMU has several satellite campuses across Florida. These include the College of Law in Orlando and the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (COPPS), which has sites in Crestview, Tampa, Jacksonville, and Miami.
The University offers 54 bachelor's degrees, 29 master's degrees, three professional degrees, and 12 doctoral programs in various academic areas. FAMU has an annual research funding of $44.5 million and access to research funding from many Federal agencies. Agriculture and health sciences are the prime areas of research focus at FAMU.
The university libraries hold nearly 2 million volumes, over 1,55,000 e-books and e-journals. They also include study rooms, a student study lounge and cafe, graduate and faculty study carrels, teleconference rooms, and a state-of-the-art information literacy classroom.
FAMU has more than 100 recognized student clubs and organizations. The university also has a student-run newspaper, magazine, TV broadcast network and a radio station. On the athletics front, FAMU offers men's sports in baseball, basketball, cross country, football and women's sports in basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country, and softball, among others.
