About Kentucky State University
According to the school, Kentucky State University is a historically black college founded in 1886 as a school dedicated to the sole purpose of training teachers for the African-American school-age population. More than 125 years later, KSU's mission is to offer a liberal arts education that prepares a diverse student population to compete in a multifaceted, ever-changing global society. KSU is also a land-grant institution with programs to study and address agricultural and family life issues offered through the College of Agriculture, Food Science and Sustainable Systems. The university continually finds ways to help students fulfill their dreams of earning a degree, whether securing them financial aid to begin and continue their educational journey; preparing students for college-level study with refresher courses and pre-entry programs; providing a flexible class schedule to allow working students to take classes online, at lunch or after work; or offering small-class sizes and accessible teachers, which gives teachers and students more individualized time for instruction. The faculty, staff and students embody the most diverse mix in the Commonwealth. Sometime ago, the university launched a Hispanic initiative to better serve the needs of the Latino populations in Kentucky and to encourage Hispanics to attend college. More Hispanics have turned to KSU as a result. Further, more than 40 percent of KSU students represent various ethnicities besides African-American, including those from Central America, Africa and Asia. KSU provides something for just about everyone, from traditional liberal arts fare to business, science, agricultural studies, fine arts, education, criminal justice, social work, journalism and aquaculture. KSU's nursing program in particular is widely known for preparing skilled and knowledgeable professionals. Graduates of KSU's nursing program are valuable additions to any hospital or private practice. The Graduate Studies department has grown to include master's degrees in aquaculture, business administration, computer science, public administration and environmental studies. It has a master's program in special education that's offered completely online for busy teachers who are required to earn a graduate degree. Most recently, KSU has added the online Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program. Other aspects of KSU's programs include research and outreach. A land-grant institution, KSU has a focus on agricultural studies, extension services, competitive research and aquaculture, the university's program of distinction. Faculty and researchers in the College of Agriculture, Food Science and Sustainable Systems are breaking new ground with cutting-edge experiments and helping to improve the state and nation's economy. For example, aquaculture researchers are teaching Kentucky farmers how to grow alternative crops like caviar, shrimp and tilapia. The aquaculture department also has partnered with the Frankfort, Kentucky, Sewer Department to explore a new, safer, more effective way to harvest paddlefish while simultaneously cleaning wastewater. The Land Grant Program staff also educates part-time and small farmers about how to make their land more profitable and how to overcome natural and financial obstacles through outreach initiatives and workshops. Meanwhile, KSU students work with researchers on campus to test theories, conduct experiments and aid in national and international research. It also allows them to publish and present their findings at local, state and national competitions, which gives them valuable experience for graduate school and future careers. All in all, KSU's faculty and staff work to serve the needs of its students and the community through quality educational programs, outreach and research.
